Murray Mckee chats to Nicolas from Swiss Duo Pharao Black Magic and takes delivery of a great DJ Mix.
Thanks for giving us this mix to use for the blog. Please can you tell us a bit about it and your track choices?
There’s some new stuff in here: e.g. the opener by Fernando or the super hot A.N.D.Y. remix for Voltron. Then there are some party tracks I’ve played out a lot lately – such as Tigerskin, Larse, PBR Streetgang. To round it off a little bit of disco action.
Tell us a bit about the music scene where you live.
I currently live in two cities: Berlin and Basel. Regarding size, they obviously have quite different scenes, but I like them both! Basel is more expensive, Berlin more expansive.
How did you both meet?
I met Konrad when I went walking in the woods with my dog. A bit later we decided to move together for studies, and voila: our project was born.
What are your first musical memories?
My first musical memory is from the US as a child: We were driving in a car and Thriller was playing on the radio.
Who do you see as your influences, both growing up and now?
Immanuel Wallerstein, Jean Baudrillard, Paul Virilio.
What was the first record you ever bought?
Casette: MC Hammer – Feel My Power
CD: Snap – The Madman’s Return
Vinyl: John Forde – Atlantis
How long have you been producing/DJing for and what made you want to do it?
It’s been a little more than two years as producers, and a while longer as DJs. I love to DJ, I love to produce, that’s all that made me do it.
What was the first record you ever made together?
Our EP “Heliopolis” was the first one, featuring the originals “The Eye of Horus” and “Mambo Marimba”, plus remixes by Brioski and Coyote.
Tell us about your studio set up?
We use Logic, a bunch of analog synths and the usual array of plugins. Guitars, some percussion and drums. We are currently in the process of setting up a Windows 95 VST Station – there’s a few nice sounding VSTs that didn’t make it into the future.
Which record of your own do you consider to be your favourite and why?
We don’t have that many original records out – actually only two: The Heliopolis EP I’ve mentioned earlier and Amulet on Is It Balearic?. But there’s more to come in 2013. I like listen to the Miami Remix now and then, it’s relaxing and sweet.
What were the best records that you heard last year?
My favorite track of 2012 is Paradis – Hemisphere.
What have you got lined up on the production front for 2013?
We have our next EP coming via Future Classic, together with our good friend Ghostape. It features a couple of originals and amazing remixes. Also a bunch of our own remixes are coming for Blackstrobe, DJ Cam and Pompeya. And we’re also working together with Reflex from Paris on another EP.
What are the best clubs/events/parties you have played at?
I think the best party was in an empty apartment in Basel maybe two years ago. One of the needles was broken, it was incredibly hot, people weren’t wearing any shirts and there was only warm beer for drinks… it was wild.
Are there are any clubs that you really want to play at in the future?
I really like Les Bains in New York and Shlag Zane in Tel Aviv. I’d be very happy to play there… Also some beachside & rooftop sets would be greatly appreciated – as any other good booking!
If you could be on your dream line up at a club or festival, who else would be on the line up with you and why?
Akay & Neevo – because it’s all about Love Tempo.
Are there any ambitions you would like to achieve that you havent already?
I need a Foscarini Ground Piece sofa.
Where do you stand on the great EDM debate?
It’s just three letters.
What’s your favourite Pizza topping?
Mozzarella di Bufala, Basil, San Marzano Tomatos, Roquette.
